Hope in the Harvest
Nature and her bounty bares a growing burden sustaining our needs, feeding our expansion, our progress. Food, air quality, health, pollution, production these are just some of the future challenges we face.
Creative use of natural resources is not only smart, it is essential to our survival.
Entrepreneurs embrace this kind of global Rubik with vim—repurposing and reimagining how we use our resources. What they’ve discovered is that exploring natures design often reveals simple solutions, built-in strategies for sustainability that when coupled with creative vision lead to innovations of the future.
Hemp is a reflection of natures multifarious design, the harvest when optimised, provides a carbon sink, biodegradable and renewable materials for paper, clothing and construction, clean lighting fuel, pesticide-free and fast-growing food crops of medicinal and nutritional value, hair and skin care—the applications are myriad. Even the heritage of this plant reflects it’s virtues.
Hemp cultivation dates back to the beginnings of recorded history, for nearly 3000 years it was the earths largest agricultural crop. The earliest record of hemp oil being used as food dates back to 6,000 BCE. When the people of ancient China developed a method for carefully extracting oil from hemp seeds.
Today, hemp oil is extracted through a cold pressing process which preserves the natural qualities of this culinary and topical resource. It has a nutty flavour and can be used in the same way as olive oil, drizzled on salads, pasta and vegetables, enriching smoothies and shakes with a delicious boost of essential fats and nutrients. However, heating hemp oil is not recommended. Unlike other popular oil’s, hemp oil contains the ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 (GLA) to Omega-3 (SDA) essential fatty acids which can help the body to metabolize fat, counteract ageing, increase immune system function, lower cholesterol and help prevent cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, hemp oil is packed with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium. Not only does this oil have many nutritional benefits but it can also be used externally as a soothing and revitalising moisturizer.

It is unfortunate that today many people in Australia have never heard of or had the opportunity to use this wonderful oil, but this is starting to change. Since Hemp Foods Australia started manufacturing a range of certified organic hemp products, hemp oil has grown in popularity and can now be found in health food stores across Australia and online (labelled for external use only as laws in Australia are slow to recognise the nutritional value of this exceptional resource).
If you’re looking for a tasty, healthy and versatile oil, why not try hemp?
Hemp Foods Australia helped pioneer a new market for hemp in Australia, their range of hemp products includes: hulled seeds, oil, protein, and soap.
