Organic Angels
Ideally we would all love a little patch of fresh produce to gather as we desire. The ability to cultivate a wholesome crop with which we can nourish ourselves and our loved ones—speaks to our instincts for survival and our deep-rooted connection with nature. But sadly, many of us have no soil to sow, or the knowledge to grow… an edible garden of our own.
If only there were some Organic Angels to deliver nature’s harvest to the door!
In this series of posts, I would like to introduce you to some passionate folks who all share similar values; most chiefly, an appreciation for nature and her bounty. These resourceful artisans preserve our human heritage of crafting from the wild to produce products that restore our sense of well-being and connection to nature.
My first interview is with the Melbourne-based, Organic Angels—who craft bespoke boxes of seasonal produce.
Q/A with Sarah Butler, co-founder Organic Angels www.organicangels.com.au
What are the benefits of Organic Produce (to consumer, grower and environment)?
Organic produce benefits all, the consumer, grower and environment. Organic growing means less chemicals in our rivers and streams, more biodiversity and protection to local and natural birds and wildlife. The consumers get to enjoy eating non toxic food, which actually tastes like food is intended. Most of the organic growers we have met over the years are very passionate about what they do. They work extremely hard producing great organic products. It is great to see the demand for organic produce increase, so that our growers can benefit.
What do you love about running Organic Angels?
Organic Angels was an idea sparked 10 years ago, around the time we were to begin our first son on solid foods. We wanted a service that could home deliver organic produce and an easy online ordering system. At the time there was not many options, so we decided to start the business. We never expected to be where we are today. I love how our business has grown and seeing the potential of what it could be. I love building this dream together with my husband and influencing our 3 sons about good food and health. I love seeing our staff at work having a laugh and joining in packing boxes with them. I love our customers and interacting with them as much as we can.
How does is this expressed in your business (unique service, company values/standards)?
We are always looking at how we can improve our service and products, which requires improving our systems and processes as needed and being up to speed with what customers are wanting. Looking after our customers is major priority and value in our business. We want to engage with them and build our community as much as we can through phone calls, emails, social media, and chatting at their door when we drop off their order. We re-iterate this value to our staff, so they are aware how important this is to us. We have a passionate and professional team and they are an amazing help to our business.
What role does Organic Angels play in supporting local growers and making organics more widely available?
We only support Australian produce and local wherever possible. Certain times of the year 90% of the produce is from Victoria. We occasionally source kiwi fruit from New Zealand, as the golden kiwi fruits are a big favourite for customers. We have some growers who deliver direct to us and we really value that one on one relationship. The great thing about our business is that we can tell customers where their produce has come from and who it is certified by. This transparency is important to customers as many are in tune to where their food is coming from. Having the convenience of home delivery also makes it more accessible to homes that don’t have access to organic options nearby.
How has interest in organics changed since you began?
We started Organic Angels in 2006 and at the time there were not many options on where to buy organic. We have seen a huge growth in the last 5 years and organic is more readily available in supermarkets, markets and retails shops (including online). Consumers are becoming much more aware about benefits of organic food and sourcing food locally.
Where do you envisage bespoke boxes of organics going?
Organic boxes are a great way of getting seasonal and the best value produce to the customer. Produce comes in the day before it goes out, so everything is super fresh. More customers are wanting to simplify their shopping due to time pressures.
What are some of your favourite organics (where you really taste the difference)?
I love my veggies and you can really taste the difference in organic produce compared to non-organic. I would say everything tastes better, but some of my favourites that are a flavour explosion would be sweet corn, tangelos and peas.
Any tips on what to look for in quality produce?
Some organic produce will have some lumps and bumps and look imperfect in size, but that is normal. Don’t judge an organic fruit or veggie by how it looks! Just look out for freshness.
What advice do you have for those looking to start a business based on a passion?
Pursue your passion, take little steps at a time and do lots of research and business plan. Speak to likeminded people and ask for help when you need it.
How do you like to make the most of left overs?
A winter favourite is roast chicken then making a delicious chicken stock out of the bones. I place the bones in the slow cooker with some chopped carrots, celery, onions, leek, garlic, parsley, cloves, bay leaf and lots of sea salt and pepper. I leave it overnight, strain and portion out to freeze and use for soups and stews.
