Silent but for the distant song of birds, the hours before dawn are typically peaceful unless you have a possum in your roof!
The ruckus of a well-fed possum rustling about ones roof could wake the dead, indeed it disturbs countless residents on a nightly basis in Australia.
Possums have become increasingly tolerant of humans, taking-up residence in inner city and suburban homes in ever-growing numbers. Because they are highly territorial, the best way to relocate these unwanted tenants, is through passive deterrents and alternative accommodation.
If a possum has made its home in your roof, follow these steps to remove it and make sure it does not return.
1. Provide alternative accommodation, click here for instructions on how to construct a weather-proof possum house.
2. Possums mark their territory with scent, so if possible locate their nest and move it from your roof to their possum house. This will encourage them to relocate.
3. Having a possum close-by will deter other possums, therefor it is of mutual benefit to place the possum house near your home. A tree at least 4 meters (12 feet) from the ground will keep the possum safe from cats and dogs.
4. A piece of fruit placed inside the possum house will also help entice your furry neighbour to shift locations.
5. Once you are sure a possum has left your roof, trim any overhanging branches and repair or cover their entry points.
6. To further deter re-entry, scatter quassia chips throughout the roof cavity. A natural repellent from quassia plants often sold in hardware stores and some pharmacies.
7. A light bulb in your roof is another harmless method of manipulation. Encouraging nocturnal marsupials to reconsider the possum house you so kindly provided.
