Soft unshaved grass underfoot with a tapestry of blossoms bejewelling its sea of green—above creampuff clouds dance suggesting the day is perfect for a picnic.
Serendipitous moments like this call for spontaneous and carefree indulgence. Let tomorrow wait for the gentle winds of today are calling.
Heading out for a picnic unpacked can be an adventure most rewarding.
In the market villages of Provence it is a daily affair to peruse the freshest harvest, homemade and handcrafted wares. These countryside markets offer a veritable treasure-trove of gastronomic delights and quaint characterful wares, just the right ingredients to make the perfect picnic. With magical meadows nearby, atmospheric-restaurant reservations aren’t required.
How to make a day of it…
Head out as the sun rises and the stalls are just being setting up, this offers you first run at the freshest produce and a chance to converse with vendors before the hum of the crowd converges.
Prioritise your purchases, beginning with a basket for your produce. Choose a basket with a broad base and open design to fit a good baguette or bâtard (a loaf that can be sliced or torn easily).
Preserves and Pâtés are staples of a provencal picnic. You should find an assortment of jams, pickles, tapenade, rillettes and other spreadable products to fill your hamper.
Cured or cooked meats can be carved to order, and artisan cheeses sliced as desired.
Vine ripened grapes, tomatoes, and olives add a burst of fresh flavours to your alfresco cuisine.
Add a bottle of champagne (and some cheap glasses) or a light wine and your almost ready to dine!
All you need now is one tool, before leaving the market to head for the meadow… a sharp knife (such as a folding Opinel knife).
What better way to enjoy a bounty of good food and fine weather than to choose a setting with a view. Look for a shaded spot by a river or stream where the sunlight dapples the leaves and adds sparkle to the meandering waters.
Scenery, succulent savouries and a sip of the countryside—that my friends, is how to go from market to meadow creating the perfect picnic along the way!
Whether in Provence or some other tranquil haven, everyone should experience the joy of taking a picnic adventure.
