iBatsID represents a breakthrough in bat identification.
Researchers with the Zoological Society of London and the Bat Conservation Trust, have created a free online tool to help identify and monitor European bat populations using the sounds bats make to navigate and find food.
As a nocturnal species bats are notoriously hard to spot, so acoustics have always played a major role in monitoring bat populations. However, until iBatID there was no standardised tool for identifying species from their calls.
Important indicators of biodiversity, bats like many other species around the globe reflect numbers in decline. iBatsID as a universal reference tool, could help with conservation efforts – offering a sound solution to saving the species.
Volunteers around the world can help collect bat sounds to keep track of any changes in abundance or distribution of the species.
