Elephants have a tremendous sense of smell. They can sniff out water from over a mile away, so it’s no surprise they can easily sense a maize field and proceed to feast on a vital cash crop.
For years villagers in southwest Zambia tried everything they could think of to keep the elephants at bay–sleeping out in the fields, lighting fires and banging drums. They even tried using vuvuzela horns to scare away the elephants. Now they’ve found a spicy, pungent solution that helps them guard their crops 24 hours a day.
